Carbon Beach Club

RT: Hello and welcome to CorkRules!

A podcast where, in each episode, we will review a wine list from your favorite restaurants. I’m your host Robert Tas along with Grace Hood, Wine educator and certified sommelier. Hello Grace, it’s great to have you!

GH: Greetings Robert!

RT: Before we jump in, let’s talk about CorkRules.

We created CorkRules to demystify wine lists because we know from experience, that sometimes when we get that list handed to us, well… it can be intimidating, and even a little daunting.

Our aim is to help prepare you to navigate that list, find those hidden gems, or value wines or that special bottle that will take your dining experience over the top.

RT: So, sit back and listen as we review your favorite wine list. Grace, what are we reviewing today?

GH: We’re going to the beach baby! Specifically the Malibu beach Inn to their award winning restaurant, The Carbon Beach Club

RT: Hold on let me put on some sunscreen and I’ll meet you there!

GH: I love it! What should I order for us?

RT: Well if I know you, Champagne of course!

GH: And they’ve got some great selections for sparkling! We could either have the Henriot Brut Rose or if we’re really feeling ourselves, they have a 2010 Dom Perignon

RT: Ooo perfect. Nothing like bubbles on the beach. What are we ordering for white wine?

GH: If it’s a super hot summer day, then let's get something to cool off with! Feeling either this  Gruner Veltliner from Rudi Pichler, or maybe the Vermentino from Argiolas

RT: Delicious. What about if we’re feeling rose all day?

GH: We could go with Bobby Stuckey’s La Spinetta if we’re thinking Italian, or some classic Provence picks. The Domaine Otto or the Rumor would be perfect

RT: I love it. That’ll def beat the heat of the Southern California summer day. Now how about when we’re finished with the beach and ready for a fabulous meal? We’re going to need some reds of course.

GH: Naturally. Starting with some pinot selections – If we’re feeling French we could do the 2013 Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru, or if we wanted California we could go with the 2013 Pinot Noir Rochioli Riverblock from Williams Selyem out of Sonoma

RT: Love a good pinot. What we’re in the mood for a Spanish or Italian red?

GH: Love where your heads at! For Spain, I’m looking at this 2014 Veja Sicilia from Ribero Del Duero. And for an Italian they’ve got a 2012 Barolo from Paolo Scavino

RT: Oh that’s a tough choice. What about something more full bodied for the cabernet drinkers out there?

GH: I got you – If you’re craving a classic California cab, I would go with the 2012 Dominus. But if you’re wanting a Bordeaux, then it’s gonna have to be the 2009 Chateau St. Pierre from Saint Julien.

RT: Fabulous choices Grace. Now how about some beach budget bottles  - say that 3 times fast hahah

GH: Beach budget bottles beach budget bottles beach budget bottles hahah For a wallet friendly White, I would do this Muscadet from Domaine des Quatres Routes. And for a red – Gonna have to be a classic - the 2016 Muga from Rioja

RT: Ooo two great choices. And loving how affordable they are. Now what about some celebratory bottles?

GH: For a celebration – def going to have be the Krug Grand Cuvee, or the 2012 Opus One.

RT: Amazing! Grace, thank you so much for helping us navigate the list at Carbon Beach Club.
